Michael Rice

Michael is an Australian-qualified lawyer with a background in Indigenous land rights, extractive and infrastructure projects and corporate governance. He now specialises in addressing the sustainability of European consumption of forest-risk commodities. His work focuses on regulatory measures to address the environmental and human rights impacts associated with global soft commodity supply chains and reducing the global deforestation footprint of major consumer markets like the EU, UK and China. Before joining ClientEarth, Michael worked for a Dutch environmental justice and human rights NGO where he collaborated with a global network of civil society partners on issues related to Indigenous rights, land and water security, gender and climate justice and impacts on them from European trade and investments. He has worked at the International Criminal Court and the UN Headquarters, in the pro bono legal sector and in private practice. He holds a double degree in law and justice studies and a Master of Laws in public international law.
