Marije Schaafsma

Marije uses micro-economic and social sciences methods to assess the value of biodiversity and ecosystem services to human wellbeing in different contexts, and aims to make her research support the most vulnerable in society. Her research experience spans peatland conservation in Indonesia, forest conservation in Tanzania, climate smart agriculture in Malawi, modern energy adoption in Nepal, multidimensional poverty impacts of agricultural commodities globally, as well as economic values of the EU Water and Marine Framework Directives, and nature-based solutions in the Netherlands.

Marije teaches courses on Values of Ecosystem Services, Governance of Biodiversity, and Global Development and Prosperity. After her PhD at the Vrije Universiteit, she worked at the Universities of East Anglia, Cambridge and Southampton, before returning to Amsterdam, where she is now the head of the Environmental Economics group at the Institute for Environmental Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Marije was a Lead Author on the IPBES Values Assessment, where she focused on the justice factors in valuation, and is a Coordinating Lead Author on the IPBES Business and Biodiversity Assessment, addressing the dependencies of global value chains on nature.
